African Spirituality
The Ubuntu Institute program looks at the role of spirituality in the development sector. In the epistemology of Spirituality, we have to deal with the fact that this is an intangible issue, but also one that has important and yet unexplored roles in social development. African spirituality influences behavior, norms and values that affect everyday lives of people. It is important to consider when developing social interventions.
The program explores:
- The issue of identity. How does identity, and how we see ourselves, have an impact on social development issues such as HIV/AIDS and gender/women empowerment?
- What does it mean to be African? With the forces of globalization and modernization taking over ‘our African ways of life’, how do we maintain our cultures and adapt?
- How can we negotiate the tension between local practice and global description of African spirituality
- How can Morals and Values be used to resolve conflicts, fight crime and re-establish respect amongst individuals and society?
Applications of our Program
- Conferences; bringing together African Faith Based Organizations, Traditional leaders together with the public and private sector to design effective, relevant and innovative interventions in social development.
- Workshops, seminars and awards promoting Values Based Leadership
- Research; investigating ways African spirituality can be better understood and mainstreamed to inform practical solutions to African problems
