Statistics: where are we now?
- 113 million children do not attend school worldwide. Sub-Saharan Africa currently accounts for 43 million of the 113 million.
- Adult illiteracy rates in Africa are as high as 78% for men and 93% for women, only in 4 states including South Africa are they below 20%.
- In South Africa, it is estimated that 30% of adults over 15 years old are not functionally literate, and 1 in 3 South Africans aged 20 and older have not completed primary school or have had no schooling at all.
Ubuntu Programs
- Promote cultural and innovative ways to educating youth and children in the region. Our focus has been mostly on Maths and Science in South Africa. According to the International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), South African learners scored lowest out of 50 countries in the 2003 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).
- Ubuntu is working on a program to investigate how culture, heritage and multilingualism influence learning, methods of teaching, expectations/ beliefs on education and how performance of learners can be increased
- Ubuntu supports various home-based care orphanages in South Africa and Swaziland
